I don’t know if you have noticed it but there is an excited buzz in the air. Everyone is talking about their upcoming travel plans. For me, I’m very excited about travelling with my family soon on Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer.

My family loves rail journeys and we have travelled on a few. I remember when we travelled on the VIA Rail with my parents from Toronto to Vancouver and my son was so disappointed when the journey came to an end and it was time to disembark the train.

Knowing how much he loved trains, when it came time to plan our trip to Africa, a journey on the beautiful Rovos Rail was a must in our itinerary. And as an Australia Specialist, I know that for many of my clients, when they travel to Australia, the Ghan is how they choose to discover the Outback and the Red Centre.

Although some people choose to focus solely on a destination, many realize that the train can play an essential role in their journey and can add a nice touch of variety in a multi week itinerary. No matter if you are looking for something vintage or something a little more modern, keep reading to discover some of the top rail journeys around the world.

The Belmond Andean Explorer

Located in the beautiful country of Peru, The Belmond Andean Explorer is a modern dream. With a stunning royal blue and white exterior and insides designed by Inge Moore from The Gallery in London, this train is as luxurious as it comes. The furniture inside is nothing less than exquisite, containing spacious private cabins with oversized headboards.

The Maharajas' Express

If you have ever wanted to go to India, the Maharajas' Express might be for you. Not only is the train reminiscent of a fairytale with its golden interior and features such as private butlers and fine dining, but it also takes you to extravagant places. From magnificent palaces to lively markets, this luxury train lets you explore all of the best parts of India while living in comfort.

The Ghan

Australia is known for having various wonders, from the Great Barrier Reef to the glistening Darwin beaches. The only problem is that many of these places are thousands of miles apart, which is where The Ghan comes in. The Ghan lets you travel in luxury while bridging the gap between some of Australia's most iconic locations. With all-inclusive gourmet dining and upgradeable private cabins, this train will let you see the best parts of Australia in comfort.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Visiting some of the best spots in Europe is a lot easier when you have the Venice Simplon-Orient to take you on your journey. With decorations reminiscent of the dreamy 1920s, this train allows you to escape into the charming countries of France, Italy, and Turkey.

The Rocky Mountaineer

Found in Canada's Rockies, this luxury rail features a stunning backdrop of snowy mountains, fresh-water Lakes, and twisting rivers. Inside, things are made for comfort, with complimentary snacks and drinks provided to all guests. Make sure you upgrade your journey to the Gold Leaf Car for unobstructed views of waterfalls and wildlife.

The only challenge with a rail journey is the large demand but limited capacity. Booking well in advance is crucial.
